How to Install Computer Printer

Local Printer:

  • Local printer is directly connected to a specific computer via USB cable.
  • This printer is only accessible from that particular work station, and therefore can only service one computer at a time.
  • A computer printer does not work until you install the drivers and software.


Material needed:
  • Printer
  • Computer with Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) or Extended Capabilities Port (ECP).
  • Printer installation CD.
Steps for installing the printers:
  • Turn on computer, wait for the computer to completely load the OS.
  • Attach the printer cable to the corresponding parallel port.
  • After connect the printer to computer, turn on the printer.
  • Windows will automatically detect the new printer and prompt to install the required drivers.
  • Some printers may not be detected automatically by the computer.
  • To manually detect the printer, click on ''Device and Printers'' from Control Panel.


  • Double click on ''Add Printer'' icon to launch the add printer wizard.
  • Wizard would ask you to choose between ''Local Printer'' and ''Network Printer''.
  • Select the ''Local Printer''.








  • The computer Prompt to install the needed driver. The printer comes with an installation CD which contains the printer drivers.
  • Insert the installation CD on the CD tray. The computer driver files on the CD.
  • You need to manually detect the drivers for the installation in case driver is not detected.
  • Finally you have successfully installed the printer is appear.

Testing the printer:
  • After the printer is printer is installed, you can use windows to print a self text page to help verify the printer is working or not.
  • Click ''Start'' and open ''Control Panel''.
  • Double click on ''Device and Printer'' icon.
  • Right click on printer you want to test and click properties
  • If do not see your printer, the printer not installed properly.
  • In the printer properties window click ''Print Test page''.
  • If the printer can prints the test page you installed correctly, if unable to print check the problem and solve that.
Advantages:
  • Improve the efficiency of project workflow.
  • It is easy to immediately see if the printed materials are accurate.
  • If there is problem, it is identified quickly and correct that in a timely manner.
Disadvantages:
  • If there are multiple user that needed their own dedicated printer then cost will be increase.
  • And also cost for ink and paper for individual printers increases.
